August 2009
Happy August!!! It seems like it was just yesterday when we sent out the last newsletter. It’s become rather busy around the soap shop as the guys prepare for the Erie County Fair. The fair is 10 days long. It opens at 10am each morning and doesn’t close until 11pm every night.
There is some interesting history about the Erie County Fair. The first fair was held in 1820. The fair closed for a nineteen year period starting in 1922 because of a poor economy in the area and the difficulty transporting livestock over the poorly maintained roads. The Fair resumed in 1841 and has been held every year since with the exception of 1943 due to World War II.
The fair grounds have grown from 12 acres in 1868 to 275 acres today.
Other interesting facts about the fair include:
-
The oldest building on the grounds is the Octagon Building, which was built in 1885 for $2,037.50.
-
The James E. Strates Shows Midway first appeared at the Fair in 1924 and still arrives at the Fair each year via railroad, providing the midway with approximately 70 rides and 100 games.
-
The Fair owns the only original San Francisco Cable Car operating outside those city limits.
-
The metal 40-foot span main gate on McKinley Parkway was built in 1930 to allow four automobiles to enter the fairgrounds abreast.
-
Lynda Bird Johnson, daughter of President Lyndon B. Johnson, formally dedicated the Historical Building on August 23, 1965. The Agricultural and Grange Building was opened five days later.
-
The Erie County Fair became the country’s largest county fair for the first time in 1970, with an attendance of 600,960. It is currently the nation’s third largest county fair.
-
The International Agri-Center was completed in 1990. The Center is 74,000 square-feet and cost $4.5 million.
-
The Erie County Fair set its attendance record in 1998 with a paid attendance of 1,020,662.
We hope you enjoy our newsletter and if you’re in the area, take the time to stop by and see us at “America’s Fair”.

A Day In Our Life
The last few weeks have been really enjoyable. I have had the opportunity to watch Hal and Matt prepare for the Erie County Fair. Sometimes I wonder about the two of them working together. Sometimes it is amazing that they get anything done. Every time I turn around they're misplacing one thing or another.
In order to get everything ready for the fair, Hal and Matt made a list of all the items they were bringing. On a couple of occasions, the list would just disappear causing the guys to reprint the list (and Dean wonders where the printer ink has gone). Another time, they packed a whole box of soap and put it with the other items for the fair. Later that day, they couldn’t find all the soap they wanted to pack. Finally they realized they already packed it and put it away.
Fortunately they were successful in getting everything done. Those two guys have way too much fun working together.

Featured Feedback
We love hearing from our customers. We get a lot of notes each month and many we put up
in our Testimonial section. We do not alter the notes that we get (other than the
occasional spelling error or misplaced word). We thought it might be helpful to highlight
one each month that we found particularly interesting.
Dear Alabu,
I received my 1st order of your soap today! I ordered sat and got it in Chicago Wed. I have been using various goat milk cold process soaps for the last year. I have ordered from many soap makers! I have to tell you after using your soaps tonight I will never switch! The "Rich” bar and the lilac goat milk are to die for. We were out in the hot sun all day and had parched skin, what a treat!!! No lotion required. My 12-year-old son said to me, "Mom, why does this soap smell like the bushes at Suzy and Pop's? It smells so good! A 12-year-old boy wanted to know why the soap smelled like his grandparents lilac bushes! That's some positive feedback! Thank you so much for such a lovely product. Cold process the gold standard of soap making, no water added and one ounce of goat milk. What attention to quality. I truly do not know if other people make a product as superior as yours. I cannot wait to try your other fragrances. Thank you so much I am very happy new customer. The lather is delightful and the fast shipping and excellent customer service and quality of product has just gotten you yet another lifelong customer!
